Additionally, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) reported a $3.9 million settlement with Conduent in May 2019. The CFPB noted the practice of not updating principal balances in a timely manner and other issues that resulted in borrowers paying off loans with inaccurate balances and preventing borrowers from consolidating their loans.

In the run-up to the acquisition, an investigation by the Massachusetts Attorney General into ACS revealed irregularities and issues that resulted in fines totaling $2.4 million. When you refinance, you lose access to protections like earnings-based repayment, automatic deferral (in some cases), and public service lending. If these are programs that you think you will need, refinance may not be the best choice for you.

However, depending on your situation, refinancing can be a good choice. It allows you to choose a different student loan provider and potentially save you money on interest rates. Carefully consider your options and compare student loan refinancing offers before proceeding.
