A decent number of people who receive sports scholarships continue to play professional sports. The opportunities are limitless, but earning and keeping an student athlete grants is no easy task.

Earning an student athlete grants can eliminate the usual financial stresses that come with attending college. But just because a person gets an athletic scholarship does not mean that he will always have it. It can be easily lost if they don’t keep their end of the bargain. You see, there are certain requirements that the athlete must meet and maintain in order to maintain their student athlete grants.

To get the student athlete grants, the athlete must not only be good at his sport, but must also have a decent GPA throughout his high school career. College is no different. To maintain the scholarship, the athlete must maintain a certain GPA throughout their college career.

Applying For Student Athlete Grants During COVID-19

The United States approved its largest aid package to date in March 2023, and while federal funding did not directly affect student athlete grants, additional funding was awarded at the association level. Colleges with athletic programs could receive more money to help students with living expenses, survival aids, and health-related programs.

Students who wish to apply for student athlete grants during COVID-19 can still do so. The logistical side, completing the paperwork, has largely remained unchanged (aside from staying strictly online). However, the approval process and understanding of how funds are awarded and when has changed with the pandemic.

Many schools encourage students to keep in touch through virtual communication, especially if they have already been in contact with a coach.

However, due to constant uncertainty about when the seasons will begin again, not all scholarships are awarded. While the first recruits who have already signed will still receive their awards, scholarships that have not yet been allocated are being postponed until a more definitive plan is put in place.

This varies from school to school, and most schools have yet to announce detailed plans for awarding athletic funds. However, most schools have stated that all student athlete grants will be awarded.

Who Awards Student Athlete Grants?

With Division I and II schools, all public student athlete grants regulations are set by the National College Athletics Association, or NCAA. The NCAA voted to help current athletes and add clarity to the growing pandemic in light of federal restrictions and the shortening / cancellation of many spring sports seasons.

Student-Athletes Receive Additional Scholarship Eligibility

To help account for the shortened seasons by COVID-19, the NCAA extended the student-athlete season one more year for spring sports. Therefore, students can still play for four full seasons of their respective sport before maximizing their eligibility status.

Financial aid updates were also made, allowing teams to have a larger roster of players within a season. This is to account for incoming student-athletes who are entering college while still earning prior awards that would otherwise have expired their eligibility. Previous winners do not have to earn the same scholarship level as the previous school year.

Schools that will increase or decrease the amount of a student athlete grants must notify the awardee by July 1, 2020. Student-athletes can choose to re-enroll and use their additional season.

The same protocol has been proposed by the National Junior Colleges Athletic Association (NJCAA), allowing student-athletes to play two spring seasons of their respective sport.

Additionally, schools will be able to use the NCAA Student Assistance Fund (SAF), which accounts for non-school expenses, such as utilities or food.

More Funding Available For Student-Athletes Through SAF

The NCAA announced that an additional $200 million was added to its Division I Student Assistance Fund (SAF) account to pay for additional student-athlete eligibility. This total is in addition to its normal budget of $560 million for Division I student-athletes.

To gain access to the funds, each school must submit a budget and spending plan that will then be approved (or rejected) by the NCAA national office within three months of receipt of the funds.

Additional funding for student-athletes is awarded based on the number of completed student athlete grants, at $3,291 each.

How Will This Affect College Athletes In Future Seasons?

To date, the eligibility extension has only been granted to students who were impacted in the 2020 spring sports season. Incoming athletes will not receive this same extension. Changes will be made, if necessary, in light of how college sports continue in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additional funds awarded to Division I athletes are considered a one-time deposit by the NCAA. The additional funds will not be available in future years or future sporting seasons.

Time will tell if future adjustments will be made to available student athlete grants. In particular, these will be determined by the outcome of fall sports for the 2020 season. The NCAA has not yet released a plan for fall sports schedules.

This is also valid for the recruitment process. New tactics learned through the ordeal of COVID-19 may affect the way future recruiting processes occur.

Professional leagues have announced a plan to screen players for coronavirus daily if and when the regular season returns, but this protocol has yet to reach the college level.

The emergence of COVID-19 has also drawn attention to the college scholarship program, prompting a lawsuit in San Francisco. A federal appeals court ruled that the NCAA cannot limit student athlete grants funding for Division I soccer and Division I and II basketball for men and women.

The new ruling would allow expenses such as computers, scientific or artistic supplies, and musical instruments to be funded with athlete scholarship funds. The board voted to expand college-related expenses, while attempts to increase the amount of funds awarded for living expenses were denied.
